I started working on the podcast idea and it turned into something huge. I'll talk to you about it later, but it's going to change being a teen I think. Also, you have plenty of time to catch up to me, you're already ahead of me in, you've got a project that you're passionate about, but don't forget to be a kid sometimes and always try new things, you never know where they'll bring you.

Re: Another day older; another year older

Hey, first of all - happy belated birthday!
Secondly, I would love to hear this podcast on a gap year. It would be a really interesting topic. Finally, wow, it seems like you lead an amazing & varied life! I hope you have a great 19th year.

Re: Lessons Learned From Youthful Transgressions

I agree with your summation of Arrington's attitude towards the entire thing, making it blatantly clear that it was Daniel without dropping his name was a sneaky move. It was most likely because it is illegal to state a minor's name without parental authorization of a release of identity and Arrrington felt he wanted to let him loose on the world regardless of the law.

On the other hand, do you feel that had you been given more consequences in your youth you would have turned out different? Or learned things earlier in life? I certainly think that had Daniel been taught before given the keys to the kingdom he would have treated this situation a lot different.

Also, why the hell was he even allowed to have access to the publish button as he states was his start in "journalism." I got that from this video (http://mixergy.com/daniel-brus... done by Mixergy interviewing Daniel (I don't suggest watching the video because it takes way too long to get to the point. I just skimmed through the transcript.)

Re: Lessons Learned From Youthful Transgressions

In my youth, I was guilty of far worse misdeeds and crimes than Daniel, but in the end, there were really no consequences. There will be none for Daniel either, except I wouldn't be surprised if ValleyWag or Fox News hired him for his ability to get into the spotlight.

As an employer, however, any respect that I might have had for Arrington (and I really had little to begin with) went out the window. The weasel-like, tabloidsational way he said "we're not going to tell you who he is directly, but guess who he is .. here are a few dozen hints" was despicable. It might also have been illegal, giving Daniel's age

Arrington gleefully demonstrated his cowadice, and his willingness to do anything, including selling out his own men (or boys) for more page views. Good leaders take care of their own, no matter what their transgressions.

Michael T.
Nice piece, well thought out. My $0.02: I think Daniel should simply spill the beans, all of them, make a solemn promise to never ever do something like this again and to use his newfound position as a reformer in blog ethics.

I'm sure he can do it, he's got the political acumen and he's had an object lesson in how it feels when you do stuff that you shouldn't.

I think his apology falls short of the mark, it's in the passive voice as if he wasn't the one doing it, but it seems fairly clear that he was, so why not say it out in full: I crossed the line. That would make a big difference. And if it wasn't like that then tell the world.

As for TC, not a good word for them from me. They're the sleaziest company of this sort on the web, with their twitter internal documents session they lost every grain of respect they might have had before, and in how they handled this they went below the zero line.

They could have simply taken the responsibility, instead they hung a 17 year old kid out to dry. This could have been handled a whole lot more diplomatically from their end, if you employ 17 year olds then you have to calculate in this sort of fuck-up and you should not give them this much rope.

Protecting his identity could have been done easily without dropping all the hints about deleting the posting history and so on, 30 years from now when you google Daniels full name this stuff is still going to turn up. TC actually used it to pretend they're an ethical news outlet, whereas the only thing that made Arrington write that post was the fact that someone that he personally trusted made the accusation. I read that as damage control, and quite a cynical form of it, twisting it around so TC comes off smelling better than they deserve.

TC should spell out their rules of engagement loud and clear, both for their writers and for the public. If they want to set an example they ought to state out loud that TC has never taken any kind of payment in return for coverage.

best regards,
